Our take

Hôtel AKENA Besançon is not in Besançon itself but in the Échange business park at Chemaudin-et-Vaux, a few metres from exit 3 of the A36 (Besançon Ouest), roughly 15 km and about 15 minutes by car from the city. I would book it as a road-trip stop between Alsace or Switzerland and Burgundy, not as a base for exploring the Citadelle and the old town on foot. The free private car park, air-conditioned family rooms and a grill restaurant serving lunch and dinner do exactly that job. Its 2,501 reviews average 8.7.

  • ✓Without a car this is the wrong address: the hotel sits by the motorway interchange, far from the Battant and Boucle districts of central Besançon.
  • ✓For the Saline royale at Arc-et-Senans, a UNESCO site since 1982 about 35 km southwest of Besançon, starting from the west side spares you the drive across the city.
  • ✓Breakfast caters for vegetarian and gluten-free diets, worth knowing before a long day at the wheel.
  • ✓The restaurant serves dinner on site, useful when you come off the motorway late and would rather not drive back into town.

Why we love it

  • Family-friendly atmosphere and rooms
  • Steakhouse and barbecue grill restaurant
  • Free on-site private parking
  • Air-conditioned rooms for comfort
Why guests love it

For a family crossing eastern France by car, the AKENA solves the evening in one stop: park for free at the door, check into an air-conditioned, soundproofed family room, eat steakhouse and grill dishes in the restaurant, and be back on the A36 after breakfast. The front desk is open 24 hours, so a late arrival is not a problem. What it does not offer is a town around it: the hotel stands in a business park beside the motorway interchange, and the sights of Besançon, from the Vauban Citadelle to the loop of the Doubs, need the car. A sun terrace and a bar give adults somewhere to sit once the children are asleep.
