Where to Stay in Colmar for the Wine Route

Being on the edge rather than inside the old town means you ride out without pushing a loaded bike through pedestrian streets. It scores 8.3 from 4,964 reviews. It is a two-star with modern, plain en-suite rooms and connecting rooms for small groups, not a place with half-timbered character.

Hotel L'Europe Colmar, BW Signature Collection has the best score on this page, 8.6 from 5,534 reviews, plus a restaurant, a bar and private parking on site. Its catch for a wine trip is position: it is at 15 route de Neuf-Brisach in Horbourg-Wihr, about 3 km east of Colmar, on the Rhine side of town, while the vineyards rise on the opposite, western side. Every morning starts with a drive through or around Colmar before the first cellar. I would choose it for comfort and dinner without moving the car, not for closeness to the slopes.

B&B HOTEL Colmar Lumière, at 1 bis rue des Frères Lumière on the northern edge of Colmar, is a road-trip stop: air-conditioned, soundproofed rooms, a buffet breakfast and parking on site. The air conditioning is worth more here than it sounds, because the Vosges keep rain away from Colmar, one of the driest towns in France, and summer afternoons on the plain get hot. It is too far out to walk to dinner in the old town; for a group with a designated driver doing loops of the villages, that matters less.

Timing shapes this trip more than the hotel does. The Kut'zig bus runs only from early April to the second weekend of October: Friday to Sunday and public holidays in April, May, June and October, Tuesday to Sunday in July, August and September, one loop every 1 h 45, booking compulsory. In the old town, Domaine Robert Karcher et Fils, at 11 rue de l'Ours, makes its wines from the Harth, the gravelly vineyard on the north-western edge of Colmar, and still uses the oldest working cellars in town, in a farm dating from 1602. Karcher works its vines organically; the town estate has been certified organic since its 2023 vintage.
