For a first visit, this is my choice.

It sits three minutes on foot from Place Victor Hugo, the large square at the meeting point of the old town and the 19th-century city, and each unit has a living area, a work desk and a kitchenette with hot-plate, microwave and fridge. I would choose it for a longer stay where you want to shop at the covered market of Les Halles Sainte-Claire, cook a few meals and still reach the Musée de Grenoble and the Isère quays on foot.

Not every hotel here is historic, and some are not even in the old town, so I want to be clear. It is not in a historic building, but secure parking is a real advantage in a city whose old streets are narrow and largely pedestrian. From there you can drive out to the Château de Vizille, home of the Museum of the French Revolution, or up into the Vercors and Chartreuse for the day.
