About this stay

This renovated Mercure hotel places you right in the heart of La Rochelle, with the train station just a two-minute walk away and the aquarium directly opposite. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramic restaurant, Gaée, where you can savour regional dishes while taking in sweeping views of the historic port and its famous towers. After a day of exploring, the swimming pool and its large terrace offer a perfect spot to unwind, perhaps with a drink from the bar. The hotel is designed for comfort and convenience, offering free Wi-Fi and 24-hour reception, making it a solid base for discovering the city.

Our take

I would pick the Mercure La Rochelle Vieux Port for its view first: the panoramic restaurant faces the old harbour and the towers that define the city. The renovated rooms, the pool with a wide terrace and the bar make it an easy base for a city break on foot. Guests who prefer a small boutique address may want something more intimate.

  • ✓Book a table at the Gaée restaurant for dinner to experience the panoramic views at sunset.
  • ✓Take advantage of the hotel's proximity to the aquarium, it's literally across the street.
  • ✓Consider the private parking if you're arriving by car, as central parking can be challenging.

Why guests love it

The outdoor pool and its large terrace are what I like most here for families, a real asset after a day walking the quays of La Rochelle. The panoramic restaurant looks over the Old Port and its famous towers, so even dinner becomes part of the visit. Breakfast and the menu lean on fresh local seafood. The hotel accepts pets, and its rating of 8.8 from more than 1,700 reviews tells me guests leave satisfied.
