Historic Hotels in Saint-Malo and Intra-Muros
Saint-Malo's history is written in granite: the walled city of Intra-Muros, home port of the explorer Jacques Cartier and the corsair Robert Surcouf, was largely destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt stone by stone in the decades that followed. The ramparts survived and still circle the old town, with the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent at its centre. Beyond the walls, Saint-Servan keeps the 14th-century Tour Solidor and the shipowners built their country houses, the malouinières, in the surrounding countryside. Saint-Malo is a city of sailors, explorers and corsairs, proud of its independent past and of the granite walls that frame it. Rebuilt after 1944 with the same stone and roofline, Intra-Muros feels old even where it is recent. The tides, among the largest in Europe, still decide when you can walk to the Grand Bé, where Chateaubriand is buried.

Inside the walls or among the mansions
A historic stay in Saint-Malo is mostly about where you sleep relative to the ramparts. Inside Intra-Muros, the cathedral, the castle that now houses the town hall and museum, and the walk along the top of the walls are all a few minutes away.
