Hôtel La Ponche fills a row of former fishermen's houses at 5 rue des Remparts, backing onto the old town walls and looking straight over the small Ponche beach, a few minutes' walk from the port. It started in 1948 as a fishermen's bar and kept that scale: 21 rooms, recently redecorated by the designer Fabrizio Casiraghi, a Mediterranean restaurant and a bar. Rooms face either the sea or the town. I would book it to live in old Saint-Tropez on foot, not for a pool or a big resort. Its 244 reviews average 9.4.
