About this stay
Toulon's station is the reason to stay here. The direct TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon takes just under four hours, the night Intercités from Paris Austerlitz arrives early the next morning, and bus line 102 runs to Toulon-Hyères airport, 20 km away. The bus terminal is across the road, and the Zénith Oméga concert hall, on boulevard Commandant Nicolas, is a few minutes' walk.
The town lies downhill. The marina and its quays are about 1 km away, a 14-minute walk, with the Corsica Ferries quays at the port; buses for the Mourillon beaches, about 3.5 km from the hotel, leave from the port. Check-in starts at 2 pm, check-out is at noon, and reception keeps bags on either side of your stay. The entrance has a few steps and there are no ground-floor rooms.

Our take
Grand Hôtel de la Gare stands at 14 boulevard de Tessé, directly across from Toulon's railway station and bus terminal, so you can step off a direct TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon, just under four hours, and be in your room two minutes later. Its 39 soundproofed, air-conditioned rooms range from singles to quadruples, and a lift serves the floors, though its door is only 70 cm wide and there are a few steps at the entrance. I would book it for an early train, the night before a Corsica ferry or a show at the Zénith Oméga. I would not book it for a seaside break: the Mourillon beaches are about 3.5 km away. Its 1,879 reviews average 8.5.
- ✓Catching an early train or ferry? Order the takeaway breakfast the day before and give the time you want it; the buffet itself opens at 7 am on weekdays and 8 am at weekends.
- ✓The hotel has no garage of its own. Its partner is the Q-Park de la Gare, the nearest car park, booked online, with a 1.9 m height limit, so vans and roof boxes will not fit.
- ✓Parking des Lices, about 300 m away, is free, and street parking in Toulon is free from 7 pm to 9 am and all day on Sundays and public holidays.
- ✓On Réseau Mistral buses the driver sells only the single ticket, paid in cash with small notes; every other ticket is sold in the Mistral app or at a Mistral agency, so load it before heading for the Mourillon beaches.
- ✓Reception is staffed 24 hours and keeps your luggage before check-in, from 2 pm, and after check-out at noon, which helps on a late ferry or train day.
Why we love it
- Across the road from the TGV station
- Takeaway breakfast for early departures
- A lift, with triple and quadruple rooms
- Reception open around the clock
Why guests love itTriple and quadruple rooms, a lift and a station across the road make this hotel workable for a family travelling by train, with one caveat for pushchairs: the lift door is 70 cm wide, there are steps at the entrance and no rooms on the ground floor. Small and medium-sized pets are accepted in some room categories. The marina is about 1 km downhill, a 14-minute walk with children, and the ferry quays are at the port too. There is no pool on site, but guests have access, on the hotel's conditions, to the pool, sauna and gym of the Grand Hôtel Dauphiné, the group's address in the centre, under 10 minutes' walk away. Families who want the beach outside the door should look at Le Mourillon, about 3.5 km away: this address is at the top of town, by the tracks.
